Seeing both sides

Every now and again I am reminded about how important it is to truly hear and understand your client’s perspective. I had a client on my old server and moved them to my new server — mostly because of reoccurring emails issues that for some reason presented themselves as oddball gremlins that were often difficult to figure out. With the new server, it made this easier. All good right? Well no. I received a very panicked phone message that they were not getting their email although their clients had sworn it was sent. The reason they were not seeing them — easy enough to figure out: they were using POP email and now they are using IMAP and the mail was safely tucked in the Spam box in their Apple Mail account program. Now, I have a range of clients and all of them on many different levels of experience of knowledge with technology. I had explained the difference between IMAP and POP mail but I HEARD my client today when it dawned on me they did not know exactly what that meant in this instance.

You might be saying, “Well of course Kimberly, that’s quite apparent.” Yes and no. I agree with the fact that they did not fully understand from the training and setup, but it was more difficult to “See” how they saw the change. To them, it just works right? To us, the service providers, it works but and often needs a quick check of a few things to trouble shoot that will quickly solve those small issues first. I think if we see things from our client’s perspective we will understand where and how to bring what we see and know to the table. In the end, better communication, better services and customer support and finally, a happier client. Lesson learned.

Invisible Speakers by Emo Labs

I have to admit — I am a gadget loving geek girl, full force. When I go to Best Buy or Costco, I lovingly trace my fingers over the breath-taking flat screens. Yes, I know our TV works just fine, but it could be so much better — crisper, more TV in a sexy package. One complaint I have heard time after time, is that the sound quality from the small speakers most flatscreen TVs have is really quite deflated. I know friends who spent more on their sound systems, cables, wiring, and wiring hiders than the original TV just to get the full effect. So I applaud Emo Labs for the innovation of these invisible speakers

1 month without a technology

“Which piece of technology would you rather go without for a month?”

Well I have to admit — I would be holding onto most of my gadgets or technology with an absolute death-grip, but if I had to I could go without television for 1 month…if I had to. I am finding that most of my time is spent in front of the computer (the day-to-day grind) or a crowd (seminars). So being with the T.V. would not be catastrophic to be honest. I mean, I have iTunes where my videos and programming is found and I could put the shows on my iPod when mobile. Is that cheating?

I would watch whatever I could online and in iTunes. Really do not watch that much TV except HGTV

No, I will not fix your computer

Dear Client,

I know that you are having computer difficulties and that not getting your fall humour comics by email has delayed me getting your feedback on the content for the web site I am designing for you, but that is not part of the agreement. I purposely include in my contract that I do not fix computers, especially PCs (sorry Maureen) as part of the process for developing your site or marketing materials. I can suggest a few folks if you are in the area, but if you are not, then you might want to ask around or heck, even tweet a few people and find out who does their IT support for their computers in an area near you.

I do however assist with your email set-up and give a how-to guideline, a video and some great initial support but if you have a firewall additive on your computer that is blocking sites or email then I would again suggest hiring an IT support person as part of the team. Yeah, I don’t like Vista either. Oh and I do suggest using Firefox and not Internet Explorer; even upgrading from IE 5 might be a great help, but then again, your IT support person may be able to assist with that upgrade as well.

“To celebrate HONEY Design’s 20th anniversary, the hive hatched a creative idea to help this cause as well as Canadian artists at the same time.

Artists of all kinds, from across Canada were invited to enter a juried exhibition celebrating the theme of honey. Then selected works would be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting The Arts Project, the Canadian Bee Research Fund, and the participating artists themselves.”

So thank you ti the team at Honey Design for a great T-shirt design, and a great cause.

We will be pushing updates out on a fairly frequent basis, and the app should prompt you to download a new version. When you install the update, it will ask you to overwrite the current app. Doing so will just overwrite the app, but your settings and local drafts should be preserved.

If you find bugs: Review the How To Report a Bug documentation and submit tickets over on blackberry.trac.wordpress.org.

On Fridays here at BlueWave Media we try to have a little fun while we work. So we created our “T-shirt Fridays” where we showcase our odd, creative or just plain fun t-shirts. Do you have a t-shirt you love and would like to share with us? Comment below, include a photo or a link to your favourite inspiring T. This week’s T-shirt was inspired by the fact I am seeing so many motorcycles out in the nice weather and missing my 1986 Kawai 750 LTD. I am looking to buy another bike this year because there is nothing like the smell of the farmer’s fields when you have goggles and a shorty helmet on! LOL. My first motorcycle was a 1979 Honda CB 400T – it started no matter what the weather was like even when I rode it during the winter when the roads were clear. Yup, I am addicted.

Awww, the summer season and riding…..hmm, did I mention this is T-Shirt Friday…seems I got a little distracted.
