I like to have a pretty minimal desktop and dock, so here is a way to increase productivity on your MAC but having visual separators in your dock, enabling you to group your dock apps by use.

This works only in Leopard (OSX 10.5 or higher):

Run the following commands from the Terminal (it is located in your appplications/utilities folder):

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{ "tile-type" = "spacer-tile"; }'
killall Dock

Once the dock restarts, you should see a blank space after the last application that is permanently in the Dock — located after the last application icon and before the downloads or documents section on the far right of your dock.

You can now just click, hold and drag the empty spaces to where you want them, or right-click on them and select
“Remove from Dock” if you no longer need them.

Note: Run this tip command as many times as necessary until you have all the separators you want/need in your dock several times — to add multiple separators in one go and then just rearrange them as needed.

If you have a lot of items in the trash that you know you want to get rid of, here are a few quick ways to empty your trash on a Mac

If you have a lot of items in the trash that you know you want to get rid of, here are a few quick ways to empty your trash on a Mac:

Method 1. Just to empty without any locked items in the trash. If there are locked items you will get a pop-up notice. – shift command delete (and then hit ok)

Method 2: When you do have locked items in the trash, and to avoid any pop-up messages telling what you already know — how to force empty the trash – shift command option delete

or if you enjoy a little Terminal moment as much as the next gal or guy — Open up Terminal (located in your Applications folder, under utilities)

then enter either of these (the first one is used when no locked items in trash, and the second one is when you have locked items in the trash)

Method 3:

rm -rf ~/.Trash/*

or Method 4:

sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*

and then click enter — all done. Pretty sweet a few methods you may or may not have come across in your Mac travels.

For those that know me, know that I am big of finding ways to be more productive and have written many applescripts just to add to the mix. For those who want an perfect “works out of the box” system, I would highly recommend Butler by ManyTricks. Every MAC I have owned I have installed this right after an AntiVirus software. The amount of time it has saved me over the years..well, let’s just say – THANKS BUTLER!

One of the ways you can clean up your process during your mac working day is to clean up your “open with” system menu. I hate to admit, but it has been a very long time since I did this myself and I have many, too many, old options still listed. Keeping your mac optimized for work and productivity is a must for coders, designers and developers. This takes a few moments to do and actually provides a noticeable difference.

Copy the code below in one line and paste into your Terminal window:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Take a shot of what’s behind your screen and make it your desktop background. You might want a daytime and an evening one just to get the feel just right for the time of day — also is really wonderful for fooling people if you have multiple monitors and try this trick – I have had my clients gasp when we got that just right. They wanted a clear screen monitor too and wonderful where we got ours, LOL. It’s more difficult than it looks to get it just right, especially if you don’t have a laptop. If you have a laptop, then you can put quite a few amazing desktop screen backgrounds depending on your mood and where you choose to work.

"Earth Hour." It is a worldwide effort started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to get people to turn off their power in their homes for one hour.

Every time I leave the office, even for a quick lunch, I feel this invisible tug that reminds me to turn out the lights and put the computer on Energy Saving Mode. Now, I assure you our office is not inhabited by ghosts, but rather, here at BlueWave Media we have made it a prority to be eco-friendly in what we do — to toss aside the label of “tree-killers” that once brandished creative folks. Although we are certainly not the best at trying to do this each day, we are always mindful to make a difference in any way we can.

This weekend, in fact Saturday night to be exact, at 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm EST is called “Earth Hour.” It is a worldwide effort started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to get people to turn off their power in their homes for one hour. It is an amazing feat to have as many people as possible participate — demonstrating a global village approach to do our part for our planet and for the generations after us. It may seem to be such a small part, but it is a start. Keeping the goals in focus — to develop renewable energy sources, recycle as much as possible and to undo some of the damage we have done to our natural resources — well, doing our part. This not only takes a step in the right direction, but we all benefit so much in the long run.

There is a hilarious commercial on TV right now where David Suzuki, the global eco-friendly poster man himself (award-winning scientist and environmentalist might be a better way to put it), sneaks into a house and starts caulking the window frame of the well known draft-dodger (a play on leaky windows only) — with caulking gun in hand he hopes we might spot the dodger, and yes, he is there, robe and all wondering why this crazy man is sealing the leaks around his living-room window frame. Very off the wall, but fun none-the-less.

Taking the effort to do a few simple things not only does everyone a lot of good, but it will be nice to your wallet. It amazes me that just turing off the lights, buying energy efficient appliances and equipment can save so much over the course of a year. Maybe a great way for you and your family, or your office can ave a little money these days.

Next Saturday is also the first meeting for The London Twitter Meetup (Social Meet Group) at 7 to 10 pm. Before I leave my office and my home, I wil be turing off the lights, powering down and encouraging the group that will be meeting at Starbucks to do the same. Why set-up a Meet-up on the same night as Earth Hour? Well, trust me that was not intentional, but I will do what I can to do my part. Will you?

To learn more about and to sign-up for Earth Hour, visit http://wwf.ca/earthhour.

If you want to stay logged in to your computer while you are away from it, but need to prevent others from using it, you can lock the screen. When you return to the computer, type your login name and password to continue working.

Open System Preferences, and then click Security.
Select “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver.”
A person with an administrator account can use their name and password to unlock the screen.

Locking the screen does not prevent other users from turning off the computer and restarting it, then logging in to their own account. If you think this could happen, be sure to save your work before you leave your computer.

If your computer has multiple users and you want more than one user to stay logged in at a time, select “Enable fast user switching” in the Accounts preferences. To lock your screen quickly with fast user switching enabled, choose Login Window from the menu with your username. You applications will remain open and undisturbed but your computer will be locked.

Sometimes docked apps don’t want to open your document, even though they may be able to, so you have to coax (okay, force) them to give it a try. For example, let’s say you created a document in WordPerfect for Mac a few years back. if you drag that document to Microsoft Word’s icon in the Dock, chances are it won’t highlight (which would be the indication it can open that document). If that happens, just hold Command-Option, then drag the document’s icon to the Word icon in the Dock, and you can force it to try to open that document.
