Doing our Part for Earth Hour

Posted on 26. Mar, 2009 by Kimberly in mac

Every time I leave the office, even for a quick lunch, I feel this invisible tug that reminds me to turn out the lights and put the computer on Energy Saving Mode. Now, I assure you our office is not inhabited by ghosts, but rather, here at BlueWave Media we have made it a prority to be eco-friendly in what we do — to toss aside the label of “tree-killers” that once brandished creative folks. Although we are certainly not the best at trying to do this each day, we are always mindful to make a difference in any way we can.

This weekend, in fact Saturday night to be exact, at 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm EST is called “Earth Hour.” It is a worldwide effort started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to get people to turn off their power in their homes for one hour. It is an amazing feat to have as many people as possible participate — demonstrating a global village approach to do our part for our planet and for the generations after us. It may seem to be such a small part, but it is a start. Keeping the goals in focus — to develop renewable energy sources, recycle as much as possible and to undo some of the damage we have done to our natural resources — well, doing our part. This not only takes a step in the right direction, but we all benefit so much in the long run.

There is a hilarious commercial on TV right now where David Suzuki, the global eco-friendly poster man himself (award-winning scientist and environmentalist might be a better way to put it), sneaks into a house and starts caulking the window frame of the well known draft-dodger (a play on leaky windows only) — with caulking gun in hand he hopes we might spot the dodger, and yes, he is there, robe and all wondering why this crazy man is sealing the leaks around his living-room window frame. Very off the wall, but fun none-the-less.

Taking the effort to do a few simple things not only does everyone a lot of good, but it will be nice to your wallet. It amazes me that just turing off the lights, buying energy efficient appliances and equipment can save so much over the course of a year. Maybe a great way for you and your family, or your office can ave a little money these days.

Next Saturday is also the first meeting for The London Twitter Meetup (Social Meet Group) at 7 to 10 pm. Before I leave my office and my home, I wil be turing off the lights, powering down and encouraging the group that will be meeting at Starbucks to do the same. Why set-up a Meet-up on the same night as Earth Hour? Well, trust me that was not intentional, but I will do what I can to do my part. Will you?
